5 WAYS TO GET EASY MEDIA COVERAGE

It’s true that getting any kind of media coverage or exposure is great for business.

Here are 5 easy ways to get that ‘street cred’:

HELP A REPORTER OUT (HARO)

HARO is a free resource where journalists connect to trusted sources like you! Sign up to receive emails daily.

I’ve personally got a lot of small and large media through this, and so have business friends (one landed a spot in Cosmopolitan, another in Money Magazine).

#JOURNOREQUEST

Though Twitter is currently a bit of a dumpster fire as of Q2 2023, it’s still a great source to find journalists.

Use the hashtag #journorequest to find the latest requests on various subjects.

TIKTOK

Remember, journalists are human beings and get sucked into social just as much as we do. I’ve connected with numerous journalists because they found a TikTok I created - and you can do the same.

Check daily trends and hot topics that are being reported, and create content around THAT (hashtags, captions, etc). You can try to do this on Reels (or any other platform that has video content, but it’s easier to reach NEW people on TikTok).

If one news outlet is running with a story, you can bet that others are on that same train and looking for NEW, interesting sources to fill the article with a new perspective.

JOIN A PR FACEBOOK GROUP

Facebook is a bit of a dinosaur in the social media world, but it’s still extremely useful at times. I have friends in the PR world who STILL use, and swear by, using Facebook Groups to help them (and their clients) find new and exciting opportunities.

Do a search through Facebook, or Google, for PR groups - this can be local or general. Make sure to read over their rules and code of conduct so that you don’t get kicked out.

Have fun and play the game respectfully!

DIRECT OUTREACH - LOCAL TV

The easiest way to get in front of the right people is to pitch yourself to the actual people in charge.

An easy way to find contact information for local TV placements is through the Station Index. Poke around to find their contact information or a form for a news tip.
